STRAW.

STRAW MARQUETRY FOR THE MODERN WORLD

ANCIENT CRAFT MEETS MODERN DESIGN.

Straw marquetry is a historic technique that involves the dyeing, splitting, and flattening of straw (typically rye), which can then be cut and glued to form intricate patterns across a variety of surfaces.

Celebrating this traditional craft, whilst also looking to the future, we at Atelier Murray are passionate about creating bold, innovative designs that bring spectacle and colour to the home.

All handmade in our studio in Bath, UK.

BESPOKE TALLBOY

This eye-catching tallboy provides an elevated location to store those precious memories and keepsakes, all the while serving as a statement piece itself.

The curved structure, reminiscent of a medieval Gothic arch, is covered in thousands of pieces of dyed rye straw, which combine to create a series of striking patterns that play with, and juxtapose, the sweeping form underneath.

On the outside, a black solid brass handle invites you to open the arched door, which reveals a warm, golden hued interior, previously invisible from the outside. A solid European Oak shelf provides a beautiful place to store your objects, whilst the metal hardware adds a lovely contrast to the colourful straw.

A secondary open-style shelf can also be found nearer the floor, offering space for additional storage if desired.

THREE PANEL ROOM DIVIDER

Inspired by the classic 'éventail' pattern used throughout straw marquetry, this kinetic room divider has been designed in order to allow the individual elements to come to life.

Made up of over 150 independently rotatable 'diamonds' - with one side finished in beautiful golden hue, and the other in a dusky rose - the grid can be re-arranged into a hundreds of unique patterns and styles, making it adaptable to a whole variety of interiors, or perhaps simply your current mood.

Plus, due to straw's naturally shiny outer layer, each small tilt of the diamonds can completely change how incoming light is reflected, creating a beautiful pattern of highlights across the undulating surface.

WALL CLOCK

Taking its cue from the precise repetition seen in the natural world, the pattern of this wall clock reflects a vibrant yet gentle moment in time - when a flower begins to bloom.

The clock-hands are mounted onto a continuous sweep mechanism, ensuring a silent, seamless flow around the circumference, whilst the subtle chamfer of the underlying form creates subtle variations of shadow and light.

Diameter - 46 cm
Depth - 5.5 cm

Lattice Lamp

TABLE LAMP

This emerald and sage table lamp features a latticework outer design, which gives way to the jewel-like decoration at the centre.

Echoing the classic curved silhouette of more traditional lamp bases, the overall effect is both classic and contemporary at the same time.

Height (excl. shade) - 30 cm
Width (of base) - 11 cm
